6th year students attended a talk about CAO and PLC Options after the Leaving Cert on 20 November. Dr John McGinnity (Assistant Registrar, Maynooth University) spoke about the CAO and Dr Rory O'Sullivan (Principal, Killester College of Further Education). We would like to thank them and the Manor House Guidance and Counselling Dept, who organised the event. They are Ms Gaughan, Ms Slattery and Ms Cinnsealach. If the 6th years or their parents  have any questions or concerns about their CAO choices or options after the Leaving Cert, they should contact the Guidance Counsellors who are very willing to meet them and answer their questions.

Manor House School was a hive of activity last week as we participated in College Awareness Week 2017. This series of events celebrates the benefits of going to College and  it encourages all students to become 'college ready'. We were delighted to welcome back some of our past pupils who spoke to our current students about their College experiences and to inspire them to go to College.We had several talks and interesting presentations during the week and we hope that it will inspire students to follow their dreams to go  to University/College in the future. A huge 'thank you' to Alison Hall (TCD), Eimear Quinn (TCD), Niamh Rigney (DIT), Farhat Omar (DCU), Jessica Clohissey (DIT),  Sophie Crowley (TCD) , Michaela and Seoirse Flanagan (DIT and Marino College), Andrea Elebert (DCU), Shauna Kelly Lyons (Maynooth University), Nelice Figueroa (DCU), Kayla Dignam (DIT), Heather Kelly (St. Pats's/DCU), Niamh Downes (DCU) and Kathy Delaney (DCU). We were also delighted to welcome back past pupil, Dr Joyce Rubotham, who spoke to the students about careers in Science. Joyce is  a molecular biologist and she spoke about her academic achievements and work in the field of Science. We are very proud of them all.

The Guidance and Counselling department has been busy during the past while welcoming speakers from different 3rd level institutions. First of all, Jonny Cooper, of GAA fame, spoke to the 6th years about courses in Dublin City University. Then, Aideen Hodgins represented the Institute of Technology in Blanchardstown and listed the wide range of choices that are available in her college. Next, Ellie Payne talked about courses and options in Trinity College Dublin. Finally, Arts and Humanities courses in University College Dublin were explained by Jean McQuillan (on our fancy dress day, hence the costumes, below!). UCD's Open Day takes place on Saturday, 4 November. Thanks to Ms Gaughan, Ms Slattery and Mrs Robinson who organised these thought-provoking sessions.

Jonny Cooper, representing Dublin City University, spoke to our 6th years about courses and opportunities in DCU on Monday, 9 October.

All our 6th students along with our  Guidance Counsellors, Ms Gaughan, Mrs Robinson and Ms Slattery,  attended the Higher Options Conference in the RDS Simmonscourt on Wednesday, 13  September. Higher Options is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition for Leaving Cert students, mature students, teachers and parents who want to know what third-level university and college options are available and how to apply for them.

Exhibitors from Ireland, the UK, Europe, Australasia and the USA were there. Higher Options is the essential event for anyone who wants career guidance and information on how to progress to further or higher level study. Our students attended Talks on CAO and different career options and they welcomed the opportunity to talk to students  and staff in the different Universities, Institutes of Technology and Colleges of Further Education. It was a very informative event for all students .

Five of our past pupils recently spoke to our students about their courses and new experiences in college. They focused on Science in UCD, Physiotherapy in TCD, Primary Teaching in DCU, Event Management in DIT and E-Commerce / Retail in DIT. A big thank you to Ruth, Aishling, Eabha, Hannah and Jill. This event was organised by the Guidance and Counselling teachers.

The 5th years visited Belfield today to check out the facilities and available courses in UCD. Thanks to Ms Slattery and Ms Gaughan who accompanied them.

Some 4th and 5th year students attended a Career Summit on 10 January in Croke Park.The purpose of the conference was to allow the students to explore a world of career options. Leading employers, universities and third-level colleges were there to encourage students to aspire to third-level education and to reach their fullest potential. Students had the opportunity to attend workshops or talks on careers in Marketing, Accountancy, Aer Lingus, Medical careers and Games Design.

5th Year students visited the UCD Belfield for a Campus Tour on 3 February.They had an opportunity to gain an insight into the layout of Belfield and to get a feel for campus life at UCD. Students attended an informative Introductory Talk about the courses and facilities in UCD and they visited a number of locations throughout the tour, including: UCD Quinn School of Business; UCD Engineering & Material Sciences Centre; UCD Veterinary Sciences Centre; UCD Student Centre; O’Reilly Hall; The Lake; Newman Building; Gerard Manley Hopkins Centre and the Global Lounge and the James Joyce Library. Our TYs attended an open day for Transition Year students in Dublin City University on Tuesday, 2 May. They attended talks and demonstrations on different courses in DCU and had a great motivational talk by Jonny Cooper and Ross Munnelly as well as a fabulous talk on healthy living by Professor Niall Moyna. This will surely whet their appetite for university.

College Awareness took place in school between 21 and 25 November. Its aim was to show the benefits of going to College, to support all students in becoming 'college ready' and to encourage them to aspire to  achieve a 3rd level education.There were career talks  about UCD and Maynooth University and a very interesting presentation by Dr Greg Foley about Science courses in DCU. We were delighted to invite back some of our past-pupils who spoke to our current students and shared their experiences of College life. A huge 'thank you' to Laura Carroll (TCD), Eimear Quinn (TCD), Aisling Byrne (TCD), Laura Carroll (TCD), Farhat Omar (DCU), Aoife Mc Dermott (DCU), Sarah Naughton (DCU/ St Pats), Amy O' Driscoll (DCU/StPats), Fiona Moore (ITB), Niamh Rigney (DIT), Sophie Kelly (DIT), Sarah Whiteacre (DCU), Jennifer Witter (Col  Dhulaigh), Ciara Rose (NUIM), Megan Stephenson (Col Dhulaigh) and Sarah Byrne (UCD). We were also delighted to hear our past pupils such as Ms Aisling O'Neill, as well as those who are doing the PME in teacher training - Ms Aoife McCabe, Ms Aoife McHenry, Ms Siobhán Smyth and Ms Tara Walsh. We are very proud of them and their achievements. The Careers and Counselling department in Manor House organised all of the activities, so we extend our gratitude to Ms Gaughan, Ms Robinson and Ms Fields for making the week so jam-packed and interesting! Overview of some of the week's activities. (Thanks, Ms Gaughan, for the video!) 

Ahead of the College Awareness Week, our 6th year students attended the DCU Open Day on 18 November. They had an opportunity to explore the campuses and facilities and get a taste of student life, attend 'course information' talks and meet current students and members of the academic staff. DCU offers over 70 undergraduate degree courses in Business, Engineering, Arts, Humanities, Education, Science, Health and Computing. The presentations covered course content, choices within degrees, the differences between similar degree courses, work placements and career prospects. This will help the students to make informed choices in their CAO application.

The Guidance and Counselling Department in Manor House School provides for the personal, social and career/ vocational need of our students. The Counsellors work with students on an individual basis, in small groups and also with class groups.

The main areas of activity are:

• Personal,social and vocational/job/further study guidance and counselling.
• Educational Counselling
• Liaising with local primary schools, learning support teachers, subject teachers, class tutors, Year Heads and parents.
• Career couunselling which involves careers classes,understanding how the CAO system works, preparation for CAO application and discussing alternative 3rd level opportunites.
• Organising attendance at careers exhibitions, College open days.
• Organising Guest speakers from the different third level Universities and colleges including Post Leaving Cert colleges to visit the school.

The vast majority of our Leaving Cert students will progress directly to Third Level Education in the main Universites,(Trinity College, DCU, UCD, Maynooth University),Primary Teacher Training College(St.Patrick's College, Drumcondra and Marino Institute of Education), Institutes of Technology (D.I.T/Blanchardstown/Tallaght) and NCAD/IADT(Art Colleges). Students also progress to higher education institutions via PLC's(Post Leaving Cert courses) and Higher Education Links Scheme by completing Level 5 and/or Level 6 QQI/FETAC awards. Some of our 6th year  students apply to Universities in the UK and some past pupils have successfully completed undergraduate degree programmes in Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
