GAA Coaching for TYs 2016

In September 2015, all of the Transition Years undertook a ‘Treasure Trail’ themed walking tour of Dublin city centre. It gave the students an opportunity to uncover the lesser known historical parts of the city, such as the site of the first Irish cinema and the statue of Countess Markievicz in St Stephens Green.

To add a competitive element to the day, each of the base classes was challenged to be the first to visit all 14 locations. After a clue was provided by their teacher, each class proceeded to their destination, where they were required to take a ‘class selfie’. They were then given a ‘secret letter’ by their teacher.

After 14 locations and 14 ‘secret letters’, the students were faced with unlocking the 14 letter anagram. The first class to do so, would be winners!

Ultimately Ms Ní Mhuineacháin’s class were declared the winners, after a close finish! Well done to all involved and many thanks to all the TY tutors.

TY Graduation May 2016

The Transition Year class of 2015-16 attended their graduation ceremony in the PE Hall on Monday evening 23 May 2016,  along with their parents and staff members. Students spoke about their experiences during the year - trips, the musical and work experience as well as in-school activities such as drivers ed, first aid and African drumming.

Awards were presented. Categories included Sports, IT, Special Merits, TY Student of the Year (Ruth Colbert) and 'Spirit of TY' (Hannah Lyons). These three images reflect some of the evening's proceedings. The TY banner was made by the TY Home Economics students.

Sophie Williams, TY, in the European Parliament

Sophie Williams won a trip to Strasbourg and the European Parliament in an online competition. These photos give us a taste of her experience. The first few images show the students discussing topics to be debated in the parliament, posing for a photo with Mairead McGuinness MEP and sitting in the parliament. The other images are of some landmarks - the Atomium in Brussels, a fort in Strasbourg, a cathedral in Strasbourg, a war memorial in Luxembourg and the European Parliament building.

TYs at Zeminar: 12 October 2016

What is Zeminar?

Zeminar is an event for "generation Z" - our generation. It was held for the first time ever on 11th to 13th October, in the RDS. The Transition Years all attended on the Wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed the day - a highlight for many was Bressie's talk.

On Thursday, some representatives from the Smile Committee went as helpers for Jim Breen - the man behind Cycle Against Suicide.  The Manor House girls rushed about, promoting Jim's talk and painting face after face with orange facepaint - the colour for suicide prevention.

Jim's talk was, as usual, inspirational. Two of our very own students, Emma Ormonde and Jessie Clohissy also spoke. They are both heavily involved with Cycle Against Suicide, being student ambassadors.

Apart from Jim, there were many more speakers. They spoke about different topics, different passions - mental health, sport, volunteering ... but they all had important messages to take away. The RDS was full of organisations for young people including gaisce, foróige, teenline and pieta house. It was an amazing day for all involved, full of excitement and the Smile Committee girls all left with smiles on their faces.

TY Ski Trip to the USA: January 2017

At the beginning of January, 52 Transition Year students travelled to New Hampshire, USA along with Ms Barrett, Ms Cassidy, Ms Farrell and Ms Ní Mhuíneacháin for the annual TY ski trip. We spent four hours skiing every day at Cranmore Mountain Resort and enjoyed different activities each evening, like swimming, tubing, Mountain Adventure and of course shopping! On the last day we travelled to the city of Boston to do some more shopping and flew back to Dublin in the evening. Overall it was an amazing trip and I think it's fair to say that we all enjoyed it immensely and would do anything to be able to relive it all next year!
