Gaelbhratach

Bronnadh Gaelbhratach 2022 ar Scoil Theach an Mhainéara arís i mbliana. Comhghairdeachas mór le gach duine a ghlac páirt, go háirithe Ella Turner, Gráinne Keating, Sofia Murphy Gazzola, Mia Challoner, Alison Grealy agus Benita Bennis, stiúrthóirí an Choiste Gaeilge i mbliana.

Seo an dara bliain a bhain Scoil Theach an Mhainéara an onóir iontach seo amach. Is aitheantas náisiúnta é atá á reáchtáil ag Gael Linn in éineacht le Conradh na Gaeilge do scoileanna na tíre a dhéanann sár-iarracht an teanga a chur chun cinn iontu i rith na bliana acadúla chun an Gaelbhratach a bhaint amach. Chomh maith leis na himeachtaí a tharla i rith Seachtain na Gaeilge bunaíodh ciorcal comhrá agus bhuaileamar le chéile gach Déardaoin chun cluichí a imirt, comhrá a bheith againn agus amhráin a chanadh - gach rud trí mheán na Gaeilge! Ghlac gach bliain páirt sa chiorcal comhrá agus thug sé seans iontach do na daltaí bheith ag cleachtadh a chuid Gaeilge lasmuigh den seomra ranga foirmeálta.

Well done to all members of the Coiste Gaeilge 2022 on achieving the Gaelbhratach for the second year in a row. This is a wonderful achievement. The Gaelbhratach is a scheme which supports and encourages schools in their efforts to promote the Irish language. The Coiste Gaeilge have worked extremely hard this year under exceptional circumstances to enhance the visibility and audibility of Gaeilge in our school, e.g they established a weekly conversation circle for all students, as well as a monthy 'Líreacán Luain'  for all first years. You can follow their activities @coistemhs on Twitter and @gaelbhratach.mhs on Instagram ☘

An Coiste Gaeilge☘

Buaileann an ciorcal comhrá le chéile gach Aoine ag am lón sa cheaintín.

Bíonn caint, craic agus cluichí ar siúl. Deis iontach í chun do chuid Gaeilge a chleachtadh!

Tá fáilte roimh gach éinne. Bí linn!

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022

Beidh Seachtain na Gaeilge againn ar an 14,15,16ú Márta.☘️☘️

We will have lots of events on that week (see below) and are hoping you take this opportunity to use your own Gaeilge. There will be a duais mór 🥇 🏆 for the non-Gaeilge múinteoir who speaks the most Gaeilge. The students will decide our winner.

Our Lá Glas is on Wednesday 16th so please remember to wear your éadaí glasa to get you in the mood for our St Patrick’s day break and bring 2 Euro to support the relief effort in the Ukraine. Go raibh maith agaibh!

We are so lucky that there has always been a tradition of having a very positive attitude towards An Ghaeilge in the Manor.

We hope you enjoy the week.

5th years win the top prize for their Irish Radio programme: 9 May 2019

Manor House School is very proud of our 5th year students who have won first place in Ireland with their Radio Programme in Irish for Seachtain na Gaeilge. The programme, called ‘An Tine Bheo-Glúin eile’ or ‘ The fire lives on in a new generation',  describes the connection they have with the Irish Language and culture in a largely English speaking society. The music is by the wonderful Manor House Trad group. We are once again the only non-Irish speaking school in the country to win this competition. Fantastic result. Well done girls and comhgairdeas to your múinteoirí, Ms Gallagher and Ms Twomey. Maith sibh!

Labhair Gaeilge Liom: 15 Samhain 2017

Great fun was had by all as Manor House students took part in 'Gaeilge 24' on Wednesday 15 November. Students were sponsored to speak Irish for a day. They got 'Gaeilge 24' t-shirts and wrist bands and learned Irish songs for the Lá Mór Gaeilge. Each year assembled in the lecture theatre where they watched a short film as Gaeilge and then the fun started. First they sang 'Bí i do thost is damhsa liom' followed by Stitches as Gaeilge. There were competition sing-offs and dancing and there was lots of Gaeilge. It was delightful to see the willingness of students to take part and their enthusiasm to speak Irish.  Míle buíochas le gach duine a ghlac páirt.

Seachtain na Gaeilge: Clár Raidio (8 Márta 2017)

A group of TY students, guided by Ms Ní Ghallchóir,  recorded their radio programme 'as Gaeilge' for Seachtain na Gaeilge on 8 March.

Roinn na Gaeilge: The Irish Department

As Seachtain na Gaeilge and the 1916 Commemorations approach the Irish Department in Manor House is a hub of activity.

On Fri 11 March we once again welcome the hilarious High Rock Productions team of Seán and Niall Mc Donagh to the school. They will do two shows for us based on the Sraith Pictiúr. One for 6th years in the morning and one for TY students in the afternoon. Each show is followed by a workshop on the Sraith Pictiúr where students get to act out the events in the various Sraith Pictiúr. Prepare to be entertained! Check out these guys on You Tube. They are fun all the way. A great way to revise those 20 Sraith Pictiúr for the oral which is coming up for 6th years just after Easter.

Also during Seachtain na Gaeilge Transition Years will have a Céilí Mór. It starts with learning the dances and takes off from there. Great exercise and great craic. Ticks all the boxes.

Gael Linns Cúrsa Cumarsáide is another favourite with transition year students. It’s a communications and media course held at Gael Linn headquarters in Dame Street. It lasts a week and students learn how to make a radio programme and a short film. And all of this ‘as Gaeilge’.

The Radio Programme

The 1916 commemorations are fast approaching and Transition Year students are preparing a radio programme ‘as Gaeilge’ to mark the event.

Three TY students have discovered they have a direct relative who took part in the events of 1916. They and the rest of the team have researched their family history and in the radio programme they tell the story.

Ruth Colbert tells the story of her grandad’s uncle, Con Colbert, who was executed on the 8 May in Kilmainham jail at just 27 years of age. The story is made all the more fascinating by Sonya O’Connor’s discovery while on work experience in Nazareth House Nursing Home in the autumn.

Nessa Lyons tells the story of James Plunkett who was her grandmother’s uncle and who was shot and injured near the Four Courts. But the story doesn’t end there.

And Rosanna O’Brien has a lovely story about Joseph Patrick Jordan, her great grandfather who at only fourteen years of age took part in the Rising.

The programme includes a few more great 1916 stories. There is music and chat all of which has seen the girls make a real connection with the events of 1916. And all of this ‘as Gaeilge’.

The programme will be recorded at Panchord Studios on Wed 2 March. It will be entered in  the Seachtain na Gaeilge ‘Make a Radio Programme as Gaeilge’ competition where Manor House have been winners before. Manor House have a strong track record of winning radio programme competitions. We were national winners of the Gael Linn and Seachtain na Gaeilge competitions in 2014.

Proclamation Day: 15 March 2016

Meanwhile, back in the classroom, Irish teachers are making sure that all students at Manor House can sing the national anthem Amhrán na bhFiann for the flag raising ceremony on the day.

Orals

Students in 3rd and 6th year have recently finished mock oral exams. These were conducted in the school by the Irish Department to prepare the students for the ‘real’ oral which is now worth 40% of the Irish exam in both Junior and Leaving cert.

It is wonderful to see the level of interest and engagement among students with oral work. We have many excellent Irish speakers in Manor House and it is great to see them get credit for it.

We are also very happy with the large numbers of students in Manor House who take Higher Level in both Junior and Senior Cycles.

The ‘Cupán Tae agus Comhrá’ lunchtime chat ‘as Gaeilge’ for 6th years continues and the 6th years had a great day out at ‘An Triail’, the play by Mairéad Ní Ghráda in the Axis Theatre in November.

The Gaeltacht

The 3rd year orals are over for this year. The 6th year orals are coming up just after Easter. In preparation for orals many of our students are looking forward to three weeks in the Gaeltacht during the summer holidays where they will have fun and learn loads of Irish. Coláiste Chamuis in Connemara is a favourite with Manor House students and is highly recommended as is Coláiste na bhFiann. Check out the websites. Students also go to the Donegal Gaeltacht to Coláiste Árainn Mhóir which they very much enjoy.

It’s all go in the Irish Department, but as teachers we are so lucky to have the privilege of engaging with a wonderful student body who have a uniquely fresh and positive attitude to the learning of Irish.

Ádh Mór oraibh go léir agus gura fada buan sibh!

TY: Clár Raidio Success 2016!

Congratulations to the TY students who have won first prize in the Seachtain na Gaeilge ‘Make a radio programme as Gaeilge’ competition. The girls made a beautiful programme called ‘Taibhsí agus Laochra1916-2016’ about their connection with 1916. In it Ruth Colbert talks about her grandfather’s uncle Con Colbert who was executed in Kilmainham jail at only 27 years of age. Nessa Lyons tells us about her grandmother’s uncle James Plunkett who fought in the Four Courts and on North King Street and Rosanna O’Brien has the story of her great grandfather, Joseph Patrick Jordan who was only 14 years old but carried messages and was known as ‘Runner Boy’. The programme is ably presented by Máire Dempsey and there are contributions from Sonya O’Connor, Emma Ormonde, Alannah McGinley, Rachel Kirby and Sarah Snee. Clíona O’Brien worked on the music and the technical side. The 25 minute programme is a  fine tribute from the girls in Manor House to the memory of 1916. Listen to our podcast next week when we upload the programme to this website.

Taibhsí agus Laochra 1916-2016

Great fun was had by all at the 1st year céilí on Friday 8 April. Special thanks to the TY students who helped with the music, especially Caoimhe Fitzsimons. It was lovely to have live Irish music, played by Saoirse White, Emma Ormonde and Ciara Stack. We also had inspirational dance performances from Rachel Kilbane and Louise Chan TY. Well done to all the 1st years who danced their hearts out!

1st year Céilí

2nd year Céilí

A sort-of 'Riverdance' took place in Manor House on Tuesday 17 May when the 2nd years had a céilí, helped by a group of TY dancers and musicians. Rachel Kilbane and Louise Chan gave a demonstration of hard-shoe and soft-shoe dances. Then Saoirse White (fiddle and banjo), Emma Ormonde (guitar) and Caoimhe Fitzsimons (DJ) kept the music flowing while the 2nd years learned 'Ballaí Luimnigh' and 'Ionsai na hInse'. €230 was made at the door and this money goes to the 'Team Dee' fund. A great morning was had by all. Maith sibh!
